What is Vector Art and Line Art?

Damian LewisVECTOR ART is one of the forms of art used by computers. The images in vector art are basic and simplistic, consisting of lines, points, polygons, and curves. Vector art is akin to the type of imaging typically used to create cartoon images found in comic strips. In addition, vector art is typically used to create business logos and signs, making them easy for the brain to remember.

In addition to taking up less computer space to save and to process, there are some other advantages associated with using vector art rather than bitmap art. One of these advantages is the fact that vector art images can be easily enlarged without distorting the image.

LINE ART is any image that consists of distinct straight and curved lines placed against a (usually plain) background, without gradations in shade (darkness) or hue (color) to represent two-dimensional or three-dimensional objects. Line art can use lines of different colors, although line art is usually monochromatic. Line art may tend towards realism, or it may be a caricature, cartoon, ideograph, or glyph. Before the development of photography and of halftones, line art was the standard format for illustrations to be used in print publications, using black ink on white paper.

How do you do it ?

I'm not a cartoonist that draws from scratch. I take a digital picture and use it to draw lines and curves to resemble the image using a Wacom Tablet. I then add shades and shadows to add more depth. It's just like sketching with a pencil, but only with a Wacom pen or mouse and a monitor for paper. The Illustrations I create can be used for large format printing or for web layouts. Some use it as illustrations for a product ad.
